Volunteer

Interested in becoming a volunteer? Join Port Jackson unit today!

If you come on board as a member of Marine Rescue NSW, you'll join more than 3,400 volunteers who are committed to saving lives on the water.

You'll be part of a growing, vibrant organisation providing vital safety services to the NSW boating community.

Our members come from all walks of life and there's a job for almost everyone.

Our volunteers enjoy earning their ratings. Crew perform training exercises every day on the water to ensure they are ready for a real world activation that could save some ones life.

If you already have some boating skills, that's great.

If not, we can help you with everything you'll need to know, including obtaining your NSW Maritime Boating Licence, First Aid training and your Marine Radio Licence.

We're always on the lookout for people from a range of backgrounds who have valuable technical, practical, administrative or life skills to contribute to the smooth and efficient operation of a unit.

Our volunteers perform duty once per month as a minimum but our rostering systems allows volunteers to perform more duties as they wish. Rostered duty is on weekends with extra shifts on public holidays. Port Jackson unit also supplies 7 day a week support to the boating public during the period from Christmas week to Australia Day.
To join our boat crew, Volunteers must
  • Have a passion for helping people
  • Be aged 18 years or older.
  • Be capable of performing CPR on a moving vessel (kneeling on hard surfaces involved)
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills
  • Possess the ability to work in a team environment
  • Meet TfNSW eligibility requirements to obtain a boat licence
  • Be capable of swimming and completing sea survival training
  • Attend regularly rostered weekend shifts
  • Attend training courses as required including self study

If you would prefer to help out on shore, we would encourage you to consider helping us with fundraising. Alternately you may like to work at our 24 hour radio base at Terrey Hills (Marine Rescue Sydney).

Marine Rescue NSW occupies a position of great trust in the NSW community. For this reason, all applicants are required to undergo a National Criminal History Record Check (CrimTrac) before they are offered membership.

You can expect to receive some great training. All crew start as a trainee and if you have external qualifications, you can request recognition of prior learning, to accelerate your rating. If not, you will progress to Crew by completing First Aid with Advanced Resus, Fighting Fires, Sea Survival, Boat Licence and Radio Licence. You will also be required to complete a learner activity book.

Once you have progressed to Crew, you can enrol in higher ratings including Coxswain allowing you to Skipper the vessel both in and offshore.
